DIRECTOR OF FOREIGN POLICY PROGRAM
Edgar Şar is a co-founder and the Director of Foreign Policy Program at Istanbul Political Research Institute (IstanPol). He is currently a PhD candidate in Political Science at Bogazici University. He graduated cum laude and received his Bachelors degree in Political Science and International Relations from Marmara University and received his Masters degree in Political Science from Bogazici University with his thesis “The Relationship Between Secularism and Democracy: The Case of Turkey in the 2000s”.
In his current research, he focuses on the processes of autocratization and the strategies pursued by the opposition actors in autocratic regimes. His research interests include theories of secularism and democracy, democratization, state-religion-society relations in Turkey and the Middle East and constitutional law. Şar is also CATS Fellow at German Institute of International Politics and Security (SWP) and affiliated with CEU Democracy Institute. Şar writes weekly columns at Medyascope, where he also regularly appears as political commentator.
